My Take
Writing about Charles Ng is uncomfortable, and it should be. Born in British Hong Kong in 1960, he became one of the most disturbing serial killers in American criminal history, accused alongside Leonard Lake of torturing and murdering numerous victims in a remote Calaveras County cabin. What strikes me is not any morbid fascination but the opposite: the importance of remembering the victims rather than mythologizing the perpetrator. True crime culture too often flips that priority. My take is that figures like Ng belong in the record as a sober warning about human cruelty, never as entertainment, and certainly never as someone to admire.
