Eddie Marsan

Eddie Marsan is one of those actors who makes you quietly grateful that not everyone in Hollywood is chasing the same leading-man mold. Born in Stepney and raised in Bethnal Green in London's East End, he carries that working-class grit into every role — whether it's the tightly wound driving instructor in Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky (which rightly earned him the London Film Critics Circle and National Society of Film Critics awards for supporting actor), the prickly magician Gilbert Norrell in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, or his memorably unsettling turns in films like Sherlock Holmes and Ray Donovan. He's a chameleon with a lived-in face that says more in one close-up than most stars manage in an entire film. Every director who's smart enough to cast him clearly knows what they're getting: someone who will make your movie better without asking for top billing.
