My Take

Enda Walsh writes like he wants to corner you. The Dublin-born playwright came up the hard way - large family, film editing, acting - before breaking out with Disco Pigs in 1996, and that scrappy origin shows in his airless, claustrophobic theatre. Ballyturk, Hunger, and his book for Bowie's final musical Lazarus all fuse dread with a strange tenderness. A Tony and an Obie confirm the craft, but what stays with me is the loneliness he captures, that damp Irish ache for connection.
