From a Vocational High School in Amagasaki to the Top of Comedy: The Phenomenon of Hitoshi Matsumoto
In Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, a man was born on September 8, 1963. Hitoshi Matsumoto, the man who would go on to rewrite the very common sense of Japanese comedy.
A kid out of Amagasaki Technical High School became, almost before anyone noticed, a figure the whole country talked about and argued over. Comedian, film director, lyricist, actor; his multifaceted talent refuses to be contained by any single title.
Amagasaki as a Starting Point
Hitoshi Matsumoto was born in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture. He grew up in a poor family and graduated from the mechanical engineering course of Hyogo Prefectural Amagasaki Technical High School; his future partner Masatoshi Hamada was a classmate in elementary and junior high school.
He has credited that poverty with giving him a good imagination and sense of play.
The Shock Called Downtown
What cemented Matsumoto's name was his work as one half of the duo Downtown. Their manzai overturned the conventions that had come before from the ground up. The distinctive sense of timing, the absurdity pushed all the way to its limit; here was an entirely new style of comedy that made first-time viewers think, "What is this? I've never seen anything like it."
Downtown is counted among the most influential comedy acts in the history of Japanese entertainment. The forms of expression they pioneered remade the very standard by which later generations of comedians would measure themselves.
From Talking to Filmmaking
Having reached the summit of the spoken word, Matsumoto did not settle there. Instead, he picked up a megaphone and began directing films of his own.
A man who conquered the world with words took on the entirely different language of moving images. And he did it not by imitating anyone, but by following his own rules with total commitment. Everything he does is done his own way, and that is the core of Matsumoto as an artist. The growing list of titles after his name, comedian, film director, lyricist, actor, is simply the mark of a man who refuses to stay put in any one place.
Menace and Charm
No account of Hitoshi Matsumoto is complete without his singular presence. He sits there silent, wearing the face of an intimidating senior, and that alone is enough to command the room. Then, in some unguarded moment, a goofy little laugh slips out with a strange, disarming charm.
In late 2023, however, Shūkan Bunshun published allegations about his conduct at private gatherings, including claims of non-consensual sexual activity. He suspended his activities in January 2024 to pursue a defamation suit, withdrew it that November with the truth left unresolved, and returned via a paid streaming service in November 2025.
A young man who came out of a vocational high school in Amagasaki took the very top of Japanese comedy, and then kept walking past it. His trajectory quietly proves that neither one's origins nor one's titles decide how far a person can go.
As a fellow Kansai soul, I can't help feeling a private kind of pride in him; there are not many performers who stir that feeling. Hitoshi Matsumoto is a phenomenon that, transcending any single genre, has kept shaking up the very nature of Japanese expression itself.
