My Take

What fascinates me about James Blunt is the gap between the man and the myth. Most people file him under that one impossibly tender ballad, but I keep coming back to the fact that before the piano there was a British Army captain who served in the aftermath of Kosovo. That tension, between someone who has stood in a war zone and someone who can write about heartbreak so nakedly, gives his music a weight the radio edit never conveys. A Bristol graduate turned soldier turned songwriter is a stranger, richer story than the charts suggest, and I think it deserves a second listen.
