My Take
Jim Sturgess is too easily filed under singing actor, and that undersells him. From Wandsworth and trained at Salford, he announced himself by literally singing the Beatles songbook in Across the Universe, then proved range as the math prodigy in 21 and across multiple roles in Cloud Atlas. Plenty of multi-hyphenates spread themselves thin, but with him the music feels load-bearing rather than decorative, a genuine emotional core beneath the acting. He has never quite chased blockbuster fame, and I respect that. His choices read as taste-driven, which makes him the sort of quietly interesting performer I keep an eye on.
