Johnny Vegas

Johnny Vegas, born Michael Pennington in St Helens, is exactly the kind of comedian I treasure. That thick Lancashire accent, the husky voice, the apparently furious rants spiraling into pure surrealism, it should not work and yet it is mesmerizing. Behind the chaos is a genuine craftsman who acts, writes and produces, with a grit you cannot fake, and he even turned out for St Helens in a 2005 rugby league testimonial match. I value performers who refuse to polish themselves smooth, who get laughs by being raw and human. Vegas is messy in the best way, and that authenticity is precisely why he has lasted.
