Ryuji Wada

Ryuji Wada, born in 1977, is a retired Japanese jockey who received his trainer's licence in March 2026 and is due to open his own stable in 2027; he also served as vice-president of the Japan Jockey Club and head of its Kansai branch. Racing fans of a certain age will forever associate him with Tei M Opera O, the horse he rode through a legendary run. That pairing is the easy part of his story. The hard part is everything after it. Reaching the summit young leaves a rider with a problem: what do you do for the next twenty years when the greatest partner of your life is already behind you? Wada's answer appears to have been to keep showing up, week after week, without the guarantee of another horse like that. He then took on administrative responsibility for his fellow riders, which is unglamorous work nobody does for attention. He's on YouTube now as well, which reads to me less like a retirement hobby and more like an attempt to open racing outward to people who never had a reason to look in.
