Sally Hawkins

Sally Hawkins might be my favorite working actress precisely because she seems allergic to stardom. She won a Golden Globe and a Silver Bear, earned two Oscar nominations, and yet disappears so completely into her roles, whether a mute cleaner in love with a creature or an unsinkable optimist, that the awards feel almost beside the point. Her power is in stillness: a glance, a tremor, a held breath that says more than a monologue. British stage training gave her the tools, but the empathy is entirely her own. I trust any film a little more the moment her name appears in the credits.
