My Take

Hollander fascinates me because she refused the shame the world tried to assign her. Born in Surabaya in 1943, she turned her past as a call girl and madam into The Happy Hooker, a memoir that made her internationally notorious and then a working author and columnist. I respect the sheer nerve of writing one's most stigmatized chapters as comedy and confession rather than apology. Few people can reclaim a scandalous life that openly and keep going for decades.
