Alan Dale

Alan Dale is the kind of actor whose face you recognize long before you recall his name, and I mean that as praise. What strikes me most is that he didn't commit to acting until 27, after a youth spent on rugby in Dunedin. That late, deliberate start makes his global character career all the more impressive, from Australian soaps to authoritative roles in Lost, 24, and beyond. He specializes in gravitas, the executive or patriarch who anchors a scene with a single hard look. I have a soft spot for performers who find their calling without rushing, and Dale is a fine example of patience rewarded.
