My Take

I will be honest: Björk baffled me before she won me over. That voice, three octaves of glacier and lava, refuses every category I try to put it in, drifting from electronica to jazz to avant-garde without ever losing its center. What I value most is her stubbornness: five decades of making exactly the music she hears in her head, awards or no awards. The fact that she also delivered a European Film Award-winning acting performance almost feels unfair. To me she is the clearest proof that pop music can be uncompromising art, and that an eccentric public persona can hide rigorous, disciplined genius.

Overview

Björk Guðmundsdóttir ( BYURK, Icelandic: [pjœr̥k ˈkvʏðmʏntsˌtouhtɪr̥] ; born 21 November 1965) is an Icelandic singer, songwriter, composer, record producer and actress. Noted for her distinct voice, three-octave vocal range, and eccentric public persona, she has developed an eclectic musical style over a career spanning five decades, drawing on electronica, pop, dance, trip hop, jazz, and avant-garde music.
