My Take

Bruce Robinson is my kind of storyteller, the rare one who turns his own misery into something that makes you laugh and ache at once. Withnail and I came straight out of his broke, struggling-actor years in Camden Town, and that raw honesty is exactly why it endures. An Oscar nomination for The Killing Fields and a Writers Guild award only confirm the craft. What I admire most is not the range across acting, directing, screenwriting and novels, but his nerve to mine personal pain for art. People who can alchemize hardship into comedy are tough, and he is one of the best.
