Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer

What strikes me about Charles Spencer is how he refused to be defined solely by lineage. Yes, he is Diana's younger brother and uncle to Princes William and Harry, but he built a real career as a historian, author, and broadcaster after Oxford. I respect people who inherit privilege yet still insist on earning their voice. His willingness to speak publicly, sometimes pointedly in defense of his late sister, shows a backbone that not every aristocrat bothers to develop. I find him more interesting as a writer than as a title, and that, to me, is the truest measure of a person born into expectation.
