Claude Dagens

Claude Dagens belongs to a quieter kind of public life than most names I write about. A French Catholic prelate who served as bishop of Angouleme from 1993 to 2015, he is also a theologian and an author, honored as an Officer of the Legion of Honour. I am drawn to people who devote decades to thought and faith rather than applause. Carrying the weight of a diocese while still finding the discipline to write suggests a mind with a great deal to say. There is something deeply moving to me about a life built on patient, contemplative work.
