My Take

Dale Stephens never had the highlight-reel flash that gets a midfielder onto magazine covers, and that is exactly why I rate him. A central midfielder out of Bolton, he made his living winning balls and recycling possession, the kind of unglamorous spine work that holds a team together. I have always been drawn to players whose value only becomes obvious when they are missing. Now retired, he strikes me as someone who understood his role completely and never tried to be something he was not. There is a quiet dignity in that, and I respect it more than a hundred flashy assists.
