My Take
What I love about Dany Boon is that he turned his own provincial roots in Armentieres, deep in northern France, into comic gold. Welcome to the Sticks in 2008 took regional accents and small-town prejudice and reshaped them into warm, generous comedy that the whole country embraced. From stand-up he expanded into directing, writing and producing, and his Legion of Honour confirms how seriously France takes his laughter. I have a soft spot for performers who treat their hometown as a weapon rather than a source of shame. Boon does exactly that, and I applaud the affection underneath every joke.
