My Take
Dave Thomas earns my respect as a master of turning national self-deprecation into comedy gold. The Bob and Doug McKenzie act he built with Rick Moranis distilled a whole stereotype into something affectionate and sharp, and his Emmy-winning writing on SCTV proved the wit ran deeper than the toques and beer jokes. Add directing and producing to his resume and you have a genuine multi-hyphenate, later honoured with the Order of Canada. I love comedians who make their own culture the canvas, and Thomas helped export a distinctly Canadian sense of humour to the world.
