My Take

Beckham fascinates me more as a second act than a first. The playing career speaks for itself, since that right foot bent physics into highlight reels and made him a global brand before athletes really had brands. But what earns my respect is how deliberately he built the afterlife: fashion, business, and ultimately Inter Miami, where he gambled his name on American soccer and arguably changed the league's trajectory. Plenty of icons coast on nostalgia, while Beckham keeps compounding his. He turned celebrity into infrastructure, and I find that quietly more impressive than any free kick he ever scored.

Overview

Sir David Robert Joseph Beckham ( BEK-əm; born 2 May 1975) is an English former professional footballer, the president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF and co-owner of Salford City F.C.. Primarily a right midfielder and known for his range of passing, crossing ability and set-piece taking, Beckham is considered one of the best players of his generation and one of the greatest set-piece specialists of all time.
