David Icke

A goalkeeper whose playing dreams ended at twenty-one to rheumatoid arthritis, he reinvented himself as a sports journalist and then, improbably, as one of the world's most notorious conspiracy theorists. I keep a firm distance from the substance of his claims, which I find unpersuasive and at times troubling. Yet purely as a study in relentless self-belief, the man is undeniable: over twenty self-published books and talks in more than twenty-five countries. I cannot endorse the message, but the sheer momentum of his self-mythologizing is, in its own strange way, unforgettable.
