Derek Acorah

Derek Acorah fascinates me as a figure who turned belief itself into theatre. A former footballer from Bootle who became Britain's best-known television medium on Most Haunted, he built a career on the thin, electric line between conviction and showmanship. The fakery accusations never quite settled the question, and honestly that ambiguity was his real power; he made millions argue about the unseen. Whatever one believes, sparking that much curiosity takes nerve and presence. I am less interested in whether he was genuine than in how skillfully he pressed on our oldest fear, the dark. That instinct was undeniable.
