Ed Stoppard

What strikes me about Ed Stoppard is the quiet courage of building a career in the long shadow of a famous father. Being the son of playwright Tom Stoppard could be a gift or a curse, and he seems to have chosen the harder, more honest path: steady, unflashy work across stage, film and television. An Edinburgh-educated actor who values the spine of a role over the spotlight, he reads to me as a craftsman rather than a celebrity. As he moves through his fifties, I suspect his best, most weathered work is still ahead of him, and I find that kind of patience genuinely admirable.
