My Take
Elton John is one of those rare artists where the sheer scale of the career almost becomes abstract — over 300 million records sold, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Kennedy Center Honors, a Grammy Legend Award — and yet what I keep coming back to is how genuinely great the songs are. The Bernie Taupin partnership produced some of the most emotionally direct writing in pop history: Tiny Dancer, Your Song, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, each one a world unto itself. And the man can play piano like few others in rock. The glam excess, the outrageous glasses, the stadium showmanship — all of it was real, not just spectacle. His farewell Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which he finally wrapped in 2023, felt earned rather than desperate. A genuine legend who actually deserves the word.
