Eric Saint-Martin

Eric Saint-Martin appeals to me precisely because jockeys live in the margins of fame. Born in Senlis in France's Oise, he came up in one of horse racing's great heartlands, and his father Yves Saint-Martin was one of France's most celebrated jockeys. Steering half a tonne of horse at speed is an instinctive, nerveless craft that rarely shows up cleanly in statistics. He won the 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Urban Sea, rode for years in Hong Kong and now trains, and there's a distinct beauty in a life staked on the split-second of a race. I find myself wanting to quietly tip my hat to these unsung masters of the saddle.
