My Take

What I admire most about Gary Mackay-Steven is the geography of his story. Coming out of Thurso, the very top of Scotland, then being released by Liverpool and Fulham, he could easily have faded out. Instead he clawed his way up through Airdrie and into the top flight at Dundee United. As a 173cm winger he was never going to overpower anyone, so he had to win with craft and persistence. I have a soft spot for players who build careers from the margins rather than the academy spotlight, and Mackay-Steven is exactly that kind of grafter worth remembering.
