My Take

Goran Bunjevčević moves me as much for his era as his football. Born in Karlovac and a Serbian defender, he came up amid the violent unraveling of Yugoslavia, then carried his game through Serbia, England and the Netherlands, including a stint at Tottenham. Choosing football and a life abroad against that backdrop took real courage. A towering 190 cm presence who threw his body into the cause, he left us far too soon in 2018 at just 45. I find his story quietly heroic, and I offer this guardian of the back line my sincere respect and remembrance.
