A Hiroshima High Schooler Heads for Tokyo
Hiroyuki Ariyoshi was born on May 31, 1974, in Kumano-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture. After graduating from the general course of Hiroshima Prefectural Kumano High School, he did not go on to university.
In 1994 he formed the comedy duo Saruganseki — "Monkey Rock" — with his high school classmate Kazunari Moriwaki, and the two moved to Tokyo carrying their dreams. In 1995 he passed Ohta Productions' new talent audition and made his official debut. It was the moment a duo of provincial high schoolers stepped into the world of entertainment.
An Unlikely Breakthrough Across a Continent
The turning point arrived suddenly. In 1996, Saruganseki was thrown into a cross-Eurasian continent hitchhiking segment on Nippon Television's Susume! Denpa Shonen, and the pair won explosive nationwide popularity overnight.
Riding that momentum, their debut single Shiroi Kumo no You ni became a million-seller. A young man still early in his comedy career had suddenly become the darling of his era. But success that brilliant often carries a cruel rebound.
Disbandment, and a Restart from the Bottom
In 2004, Saruganseki disbanded. For a man who had tasted the summit of fame, what awaited him afterward was a harsh stretch of years. Ariyoshi was forced to start over from zero as a solo comedian.
The springboard for his comeback was an appearance on TV Asahi's Uchimura Produce. From there, Ariyoshi settled on his weapon: the sharp tongue. Coining nicknames for fellow performers and cutting in with biting wit, he reclaimed his place by honing the very "venom" no one else dared to touch — and turned a near-vanished one-hit wonder into something durable.
The King of Sharp Tongues Conquers Every Network
In 2013, multiple flagship programs bearing his name launched in succession, including Ariyoshi Hanseikai and Ariyoshi Semi. That year and the next, in 2014, he won back-to-back championships at the IPPON Grand Prix, proving his quick-witted brilliance.
Karisome Tengoku in 2018, Ariyoshi no Kabe in 2019, and NHK's Ariyoshi no Okane Hakken Totsugeki! Kaneo-kun followed. By 2019 he had become a host with flagship programs across all major networks, and Ariyoshi no Kabe won the Galaxy Award in the Television Division in 2020. He delivers cutting venom, yet thanks to the affection at its core it never feels mean-spirited — and that exquisite balance pushed him to the center of the living room.
Hosting Kohaku, and the Art of Rebuilding a Life
In 2021, Ariyoshi married freelance announcer Miku Natsume. In 2024 the couple publicly announced the birth of their first child, opening a new chapter in his private life as well.
Then in 2023, he co-hosted the 74th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen and performed his old million-selling hit Shiroi Kumo no You ni alongside Fumiya Fujii and others. The very song that had branded him a one-hit wonder he now sang proudly on the grandest stage of all. To fall so far, to say whatever he pleased, and to arrive at last at hosting Kohaku — his way of rebuilding a life has reached the level of a master craft.
His books, Omae Nanka Mou Shinde Iru, drawing lessons from professional one-hit wonders on surviving, and Kirawarenai Dokuzetsu no Susume on the art of a sharp tongue, are steeped in the philosophy of a man who has known rock bottom. With around two million followers and a lifelong love of watching the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, he remains a true son of Hiroshima.
