Imelda May

Imelda May is one of those rare artists whose voice does the talking before any biography can. What I admire most is that she did not merely revive rockabilly as nostalgia; she filtered it through her own Dublin grit and made it feel urgent. The Billie Holiday comparisons are flattering but slightly miss the point, because her phrasing carries a warmth all its own. Forming her own band in 2002 and self-launching a debut shows a stubborn independence I respect. That she also presents television tells me her creativity refuses to sit in one lane, and that restlessness keeps her interesting.
