Jake Bugg

Jake Bugg arrived sounding far older than his years, and that still strikes me. When his self-titled debut hit number one on the UK Albums Chart in 2012, he was barely eighteen, channeling a raw, vintage folk and skiffle energy out of Clifton in Nottingham. I'm drawn to how quickly he kept moving: Shangri La in 2013, then the largely self-produced On My One in 2016, refusing to repeat himself. That restlessness can divide listeners, but I read it as an artist trusting his own ear over the safe formula. He feels like someone chasing the song rather than the trend, and I find that admirable.
