My Take

Jay Kay is one of those artists who could've easily been a novelty act — a guy in an absurd hat fronting a British acid-jazz-funk band in the early nineties — but instead he built one of the most durable grooves in pop music history. Jamiroquai's run from "When You Gonna Learn" through Virtual Insanity to Travelling Without Moving is just relentlessly good, and Kay's voice has this effortless elasticity that makes it impossible to sit still. What I appreciate most is that he never chased the zeitgeist; he doubled down on the retro-futurist funk and let the quality do the talking. Over 26 million albums sold and the band is still going — that's not luck, that's craft. Oh, and the man collects supercars with the same obsessive energy he puts into music, which feels very on-brand for someone who's essentially been living in a permanent 1970s fever dream since 1992.

Jason "Jay" Kay (born Jason Luís Cheetham; 30 December 1969) is an English singer and songwriter. In 1992, he co-founded the acid jazz and funk band Jamiroquai, and he still serves as their lead vocalist. As of 2026, the band had sold more than 26 million albums internationally. Outside music, Kay is known for his interest in luxury cars, and made appearances in the shows Top Gear and Fifth Gear.
