My Take

Jeff Lynne might be the most quietly influential man in rock history. As the engine of Electric Light Orchestra he wrote melodies, Mr. Blue Sky above all, that feel less composed than discovered, and as a producer his fingerprints are on records by half the legends of the twentieth century. What I love is the contrast: an OBE and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, yet he still carries himself like a shy Birmingham craftsman hiding behind sunglasses. He chased a sound in his head for fifty years and actually caught it. For me, he is proof that studio obsession can be its own kind of genius.
