My Take

Jeffrey Bruma interests me as the unglamorous backbone of a team rather than the headline-grabber. A 189 cm centre-back out of Rotterdam, he plays the position where mistakes are punished hardest and praise comes slowest, and the fact that he carved out a long European career tells me he has the temperament for it. Dutch defenders are expected to build from the back as well as defend, which demands real footballing intelligence. I have a soft spot for players who do the thankless work at the heart of the defence, and Bruma strikes me as exactly that kind of dependable professional.
