Jimmy White

Jimmy White is proof that you do not need the trophy to win the crowd. "The Whirlwind" earned his nickname with attacking, high-wire snooker that was simply more fun to watch than the percentage game, and ten ranking titles place him firmly among the greats. Yet it is the near-misses, those agonizing World Championship finals he never quite closed out, that made him beloved as the people's champion. There is something deeply human about a player you root for harder because he keeps falling just short. To me, his enduring popularity is the better trophy.
