My Take

Joe Cocker is the rare interpreter who out-sang the writers he covered. What grabs me is how a working-class kid from Sheffield turned a gravel-and-grit voice into something more honest than polish ever could be. He took 'Feelin' Alright' and 'Unchain My Heart' and made them feel as if they had always belonged to him. Those convulsive, spasmodic stage movements were not theatrics to me but the body trying to keep up with the soul. An OBE and a Grammy hardly capture it. He passed in 2014, but voices like his do not really leave.
