My Take

Jonathan Rhys Meyers fascinates me because he plays danger from the inside. Plenty of actors can look menacing; few can make ambition, vanity, and fragility feel like the same emotion, which is what he did in Match Point and his Golden Globe-winning turn as Elvis. There is a rawness to his screen presence that I suspect comes from a genuinely turbulent life, and he has never sanded it down into something safer. I respect that he keeps returning to work after every setback. He may never be a tidy movie star, but tidy was never the point; intensity is, and he has it in surplus.
