Kiyohiko Shibukawa

I have a real soft spot for Kiyohiko Shibukawa, the kind of actor who shares a name with his hometown of Shibukawa in Gunma and somehow wears that rooted, no-frills quality in everything he does. Born in 1974, he's a guy who came up the long way, with a face and a presence rather than matinee-idol gloss, and I love that. He's not the actor who carries a film from the center; he's the one lurking at the edge of the frame who makes you go, wait, who is that guy? That weathered, slightly dangerous, slightly mournful texture only deepens as he ages into his fifties. To me he's the definition of a quiet scene-stealer, the seasoned character player who can flip a whole mood with one look, and I'd watch him in absolutely anything.
