My Take
Lee Su-hyun is genuinely one of my favorite voices to come out of K-pop in the 2010s, and I mean that in the best possible way — she doesn't sound like K-pop. When she and her brother Chan-hyuk won K-pop Star 2 back in 2013 as these scrappy, homeschooled kids from Ulsan singing their own songs, you could already tell something different was happening. AKMU has always existed a little outside the idol machine, writing their own quirky, folky, sometimes heartbreaking music, and Su-hyun's voice is the emotional center of all of it — clear, effortless, and capable of going from playful to devastating in the space of a single phrase. Her solo work and the Hi Suhyun collab with Lee Hi showed she can hold her own well outside the duo too. Still only in her mid-twenties and already has a catalog worth revisiting for years.
