My Take

Lemmy is my benchmark for authenticity in rock and roll. From Burslem to Hawkwind to founding Motörhead, he never once adjusted his volume, his look, or his values to fit the moment—the moment eventually bent to fit him. I love that he was the band's only constant member for four decades; that kind of stubborn ownership of a sound is almost extinct. Born on Christmas Eve, gone just days after turning seventy, he played essentially until the end. To me he proved that a life lived without compromise is its own body of work, louder and more lasting than any award.

Overview

Ian Fraser Kilmister (24 December 1945 – 28 December 2015), better known as Lemmy, was an English musician. He was the founder, lead vocalist, bassist and primary songwriter of the rock band Motörhead, of which he was the only continuous member from 1975 to his death. Kilmister had previously been a member of Hawkwind from 1971 until his dismissal in 1975.
