My Take
Martin Freeman is, to me, the finest ordinary-man actor of his generation. Whether as Tim in The Office, Watson in Sherlock, or Bilbo in The Hobbit, he plays the audience's surrogate, the reasonable person surrounded by madness, and somehow makes that the most compelling presence on screen. His comedy lives in pauses, sighs, and weary glances rather than punchlines, which takes far more craft than showboating. The Emmys and BAFTA on his shelf confirm what I already felt: reactive acting, done this well, is its own kind of virtuosity. He makes other actors better simply by listening to them.
