My Take
Meera Syal is the rare talent who can write the joke, perform it, then turn around and craft a serious novel, and I admire that range enormously. Coming out of Wolverhampton to become one of Britain's best-known Asian voices, she used comedy to dismantle barriers rather than just chase laughs, which I think is the hardest and bravest thing a performer can do. The BAFTA Fellowship and her damehood feel less like decoration and more like overdue acknowledgment. What strikes me most is the warmth underneath it all; her work always seems to carry genuine affection for the people it depicts.
