My Take
Michael Skibbe is one of those quietly fascinating football careers where the coaching chapter ends up dwarfing the playing one. Born in Gelsenkirchen — practically sacred ground for German football — he played as a forward for Schalke before a knee injury ended his playing days early and he found his real calling on the touchline. What genuinely impresses me is his journey to Japan: taking over Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 2022 and not just surviving but thriving, winning J.League Manager of the Year in both 2022 and 2024, before moving to Vissel Kobe in 2026. That kind of sustained excellence in a foreign league, with a different football culture and language, says a lot about his adaptability and football intelligence. The Federal Republic of Germany honoring him with the Cross of the Order of Merit is a nice cherry on top — recognition that his contributions to the sport went well beyond any single club or country.
