My Take
Mike Figgis is a filmmaker I genuinely respect, because he refuses to specialise. Director, writer, cinematographer and composer all at once, he earned dual Oscar nominations for Leaving Las Vegas, a film of devastating intimacy. What draws me in is his independent streak, the way he founded a patronage for the Shooting People community and clearly values fellow creators over commercial safety. Coming from Carlisle, he carved a path on his own terms. I read him as an artist more interested in honestly mapping human darkness than chasing box office, and that integrity is exactly why his work still lingers with me.
