Mike Phelan

Mike Phelan strikes me as the kind of football lifer the sport quietly depends on. He never chased the spotlight as a player, grinding through Burnley, Norwich and Manchester United, and then reinvented himself as a coach and trusted assistant. What I admire most is his durability: staying relevant in the dugout for decades, most recently at Plymouth Argyle, takes a different kind of intelligence than scoring goals. Phelan represents the unglamorous backbone of English football, the steady tactical mind beside the manager. I find that role deeply underrated, and people like him deserve far more recognition than they usually get.
