My Take

Mike Reid is the sort of performer I have a soft spot for. With his gravelly voice and unmistakable London accent, he made Frank Butcher in EastEnders feel like someone you'd actually met down the market. He came up through stand-up comedy and even hosted the children's game show Runaround, which tells me he could work any room, scripted or live. There's something honest about a comedian who turns into a memorable dramatic actor without sanding off his rough East End edges. He passed in 2007, but the kind of earthy, fully human presence he brought is exactly what I miss on screen.
