Nitin Sawhney is the kind of artist I keep returning to because he treats musical borders as illusions. Born in Rochester with Indian roots, he folds Western and Indian classical traditions, flamenco, jazz, hip-hop, drum and bass and electronica into something seamless and entirely his own. That a multi-instrumentalist and producer of this range earned a CBE feels exactly right. To me his work proves that living between cultures is not a disadvantage but a vantage point; only someone shaped by that in-between space could compose music that bridges worlds so naturally and so beautifully.
