Olga Koch

What grabs me about Olga Koch is the sheer audacity of building a comedy career in English, her second language, after a childhood in Saint Petersburg and a degree from New York University. Comedy is unforgiving even in your mother tongue, so doing it across a cultural and linguistic divide takes a special kind of nerve and intelligence. I suspect her outsider's eye is exactly what sharpens the material. There's something quietly admirable about turning the dislocation of an immigrant life into laughter, and I'd happily follow wherever her restless, border-crossing voice takes her next.
