My Take

Nikita Kucherov is, to my eye, one of hockey's true artists. The right winger for the Tampa Bay Lightning out of Maykop in Russia, he reads the ice as if play unfolds in slow motion for him alone. At 180 cm he is not built to overpower anyone, yet his vision and hands make defenders look like they are skating in mud. I am drawn to athletes who win with intelligence rather than brute force, and Kucherov is a masterclass in that craft. Watching him thread a pass through traffic, you sense a player who treats the game as a puzzle only he can solve.
