My Take

Hardwick interests me because he plays divided men better than almost anyone on television. Ghost in Power only worked because he could hold the legitimate club owner and the criminal in the same frame, letting each leak into the other without telegraphing it. I credit his stage background for that control: the voice, the stillness, the way he lets silence do the threatening. Even in a loud ensemble piece like Army of the Dead, he carved out gravity without grabbing for it. Born in 1974 and a relatively late bloomer, he carries a worked-for quality I find more compelling than easy stardom. I suspect his best character work is still ahead.
