Paolo Nutini

Paolo Nutini fascinates me because that weathered, gravelly voice seems to arrive from a much older soul than a kid from Paisley. Hitting number three with These Streets and number one with Sunny Side Up before he was 25, both going quintuple platinum, is a staggering early run. What I value most is that he writes, sings, and plays it all himself, with an Italian-Scottish blend of sweetness and grit that nobody else owns. His relative quietness between releases only deepens my respect; he records when he has something real to say, and I trust that instinct completely.
