Phil Wang

Phil Wang is the rare comedian who mines identity without ever turning it into a lecture. Malaysian-British, raised across cultures, he makes that in-between space the engine of his comedy rather than an apology for it. I appreciate that he is more than a stand-up; the sketch group Daphne, a BBC Radio 4 series, and a book all point to a restless, literate mind. There is structure and intelligence under the laughs, the mark of someone who thinks hard about why a joke works. He is exactly the kind of performer I trust to be funny and substantive at once.
